Voice & Internet FAQs

Business Internet, Fiber, Coax and Failover FAQs

Fiber vs cable internet, how much speed a business needs, dedicated vs shared service, static IPs, SLAs and setting up a backup connection.

Is business fiber internet better than cable internet?

Fiber may provide stronger upload performance and business-grade options, while coax services can be cost-effective and widely available. Compare actual address availability, upload speeds, service terms, uptime requirements, and support rather than judging by the medium alone.

How much internet speed does a small business need?

Estimate concurrent video meetings, cloud applications, file transfers, phones, and guest use. Upload capacity, latency, reliability, and congestion often matter as much as the advertised download speed.

What is the difference between dedicated internet and shared broadband?

A dedicated internet service commonly provides contracted capacity and business-oriented service terms, while shared broadband capacity and repair arrangements may vary. Neither label alone establishes actual availability, upload rate, latency, or repair time. Compare the written service-level agreement, access technology, contention model, installation lead time, and restoration commitments for the exact address.

Can a business have two internet providers for backup?

Yes. A multi-WAN firewall or suitable router can use a secondary provider when the primary connection fails. Test failover and return-to-primary behavior because some applications or phone calls may be interrupted during transition.

Will VoIP phones work when the internet is down?

Internet-based phones generally depend on the data connection and local power. Redundant internet, call forwarding, mobile applications, and backup power can reduce the disruption but should be tested before an outage.

What is the difference between bandwidth and latency?

Bandwidth measures how much data can transfer over time; latency measures the delay before data arrives. Voice and real-time meetings can suffer with high latency or jitter even on a connection with ample bandwidth.

Should I use static IP addresses for my business?

Static public IPs may be useful for certain VPNs, hosted services, or approved access configurations. Many cloud-based businesses do not require them. Review security implications before exposing services to the internet.

What is an internet SLA and why does it matter?

A service-level agreement describes provider commitments and remedies, such as availability or repair objectives. Read exclusions, outage reporting requirements, and credit terms; an SLA is not a promise that outages cannot happen.

Can Starlink be used as backup internet for a business?

Satellite service can be an alternative in locations with limited wired options, but performance, obstruction, power demand, service-plan limits, and network compatibility should be evaluated. It may be appropriate as one component of a redundancy plan.

How long does business fiber installation take?

Timing varies by whether fiber is already at the property, required construction, permits, site access, and provider scheduling. Order early when opening or relocating an office and plan for temporary connectivity if needed.
